Descripción:
Semantic communications is a new 6G design paradigm that places the significance and usefulness of the information relative to the ultimate purpose of the system at the center of the design. Semantic communications entails looking jointly at the information generation, transmission and usage, for the system to choose the right piece of information at each time instant. As a result, a significant reduction of unnecessary data traffic and the associated required communication, processing and energy resources is achieved. This is particularly critical to support machine-intelligence services.
In network design, the first attempt towards semantic metrics is the definition of Age of Information (AoI), which quantifies the freshness of the data updates coming from, say, an Internet of Things (IoT) sensor. Many composite metrics definitions have followed the success of AoI, aiming at refining the definition of AoI and at integrating other attributes of data beyond the freshness. This requires looking more closely at the process that is being measured.
This project will design and evaluate semantic metrics in different multi-agent scenarios, such as vehicular networks or satellite networks, as well as optimizations entailing the use of Machine Learning (ML).
